Make 2017 a Happy and Healthy Year

Every year, people put their goals on paper and strive to make improvements in their lives — improvements such as spending more time together as a family or beginning a regular workout routine. But there’s one resolution that seems to be more popular than the rest: becoming healthy.

Eating healthier is about finding out which foods your body needs to function properly and about knowing when your body needs them. Heading to the gym and pumping iron may be fun for some, but for others, the treadmill or a yoga mat are the workout pieces of choice. No matter what gets your blood pumping and your sweat running, whether that be gardening, dancing, rock climbing or CrossFitting, pick something you enjoy. It’s a whole lot easier to create a habit when you enjoy engaging in it.

Planning Ahead

Take control of the food you eat by making meal plans before you head to the grocery store. Fill your daily meals with healthy foods and stick to your grocery list when you head to the store. One of the best ways to shop for whole, nutritious foods is by sticking to the perimeter of the grocery store. Here you will find fresh produce, meats, and dairy – nothing too processed.

Another great way to plan for a great day is by packing snacks or keeping them in your desk. A handful of almonds provides healthy fats that your body craves, and popcorn is a light treat to hold you over till your next meal.

Track Your Progress

Progress isn’t always measured by how big your muscles are or how small your waistline is. Progress can be measured by how you’re feeling, both physically and emotionally.

Instead of tracking your waistline, compare how quickly you’re running the mile now as opposed to how quickly you ran the mile on day one; take notice of how you’re less winded after climbing the stairs to your office; reflect on how you’re feeling now that you’re making time to eat right and exercise.

Recognize the Reasons Behind your Habits

We eat because we need nutrients for our bodies to function, but sometimes we eat in response to our emotions or busy schedule. Take a step back and recognize the reasons behind your habits. The more in-tune you are with your body, the easier it will be to make lifestyle changes all across the board, including your eating and exercising habits.

You know your body better than anyone else, so doing things that you feel are best for you is the first step towards a healthy lifestyle done the right way.
