Margaritas are some of the most refreshing beverages during the dog days of summer! Who doesn’t crave a margarita during happy hour or while you’re lounging by the pool? Being a native Texan, the margarita — even more so the frozen margarita — has a special place in my heart: it was created here!
All frozen margarita lovers must give honor to Mariano Martinez, a Dallas restaurateur who created the frozen margarita machine. Martinez, using an old soft-serve ice-cream machine, added in a mix of his father’s margarita recipe, churned it all together, and thus the frozen margarita was born! With this discovery, happy hours all over the country became complete.
Now that we’ve had a nice history lesson, let’s talk margaritas.
From sweet to spicy to skinny, margaritas are one of the most versatile beverages around. At home, I make my classic margarita, and when I like extra flavor, I will blend fresh fruit and add it to the margarita.
I find it best to blend frozen fruit like blueberries, strawberries or cherries so when they’re added to the beverage, it ends up with a cool, slushy flavor.
Here’s a margarita recipe to get you started:
- 2 oz. of Tequila
- 1 oz. of Cointreau or Triple Sec
- 1 oz. of fresh lime juice
- ½ oz. lemon juice
- ½ oz. orange juice
- ½ oz. simple syrup
For some even more delicious flavors, I’ll plan ahead at the grocery store and pick up some fresh fruit to blend, such as watermelon or peaches, and then place the liquefied fruit in the freezer. After 15 minutes of chill time, I add the mixture to my margarita.
For even more flavor, just add 1 oz. of your favorite puree, flavored syrup (Monin or Finest Call) or any freshly blended fruit.
