Warmer weather is just around the corner, but even though spring isn’t quite here yet, you don’t have to wait until the mercury rises to enjoy a fruity hand-crafted cocktail. In fact, citrus fruits are at the peak of goodness in the month of March, so there’s no better time than now to peel some oranges, slice open a pineapple and shake up a fresh-flavored drink.
Here are three cocktails that are filled to the brim with citrus flavor.
4 tablespoons fresh blood orange juice
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
3 tablespoons tequila
1 teaspoon honey (or sugar)
Pour blood orange juice, lime juice, tequila and honey into a shaker and shake together. Add ice to the shaker and then give it another good shake.
Rub the rim of your glass with a fresh lime and then dip the rim in salt. Strain the mixture in the shaker into the glass and then garnish with slices of lime and/or blood oranges.
1 large grapefruit, washed and thinly sliced
1 large navel orange, washed and thinly sliced
1 large lemon, washed and thinly sliced
1 large lime, washed and thinly sliced
1 ½ cups pineapple juice
1 cup vodka
3 (12 oz.) bottles wheat beer or hard cider, chilled
Thinly slice the grapefruit, orange, lemon and lime and add combine them with vodka in a medium-sized container. Chill the mixture for at least 2 hours; if you have the time, refrigerating the mixture overnight is preferred.
To serve, combine beer with fruit mixture in a large pitcher and serve over ice.
1 orange, cut into chunks
18 ounces gin
4 1/2 ounces lemon juice
4 1/2 ounces simple syrup
Muddle the orange chunks in the bottom of a large cocktail shaker. Add ice, gin, lemon juice and simple syrup. Shake vigorously to combine. Strain into pitcher and store on ice before serving.
To serve, pour mixture over ice into a lowball glass. Top with club soda and stir to combine. Garnish with orange wedge.
